Farewell, Queen Elizabeth II. This photo was issued by Buckingham Palace on Sept. 18, 2022, the eve of her funeral. The queen, who died Sept. 8 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, was photographed at Windsor Castle in May 2022, just before her Platinum Jubilee celebrating her unprecedented 70 years on the United Kingdom's throne.



Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, after 70 years on the throne. She was 96.

On Sept. 8, Buckingham Palace said the queen is under medical supervision as doctors are "concerned for Her Majesty’s health." The palace said the queen is “comfortable” and remains at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she has spent the summer. Royal family members traveled to be by the queen's side. The queen, seen here meeing new Prime Minister Liz Truss at Balmoral Castle on Sept. 6, broke the tradition of meeting the new prime minister at Buckingham Palace due to mobility issues.
